“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”

― Philip Pullman

“The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon. Too often, we forget that.”

― Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings

“Fantasy remains a human right: we make in our measure and in our derivative mode, because we are made: and not only made, but made in the image and likeness of a Maker.”

― J.R.R. Tolkien

About the Press

Pinefall Press is an independent publishing house dedicated to human-written speculative fiction.

We publish books that tell of distant worlds, forgotten histories, strange landscapes, old gods, and people trying to make their way through circumstances larger than themselves.

The press began as a home for Devin’s own work and is growing from a desire to approach independent publishing with the same care given to the writing. That means thoughtful editing, distinctive artwork from talented human artists, shelf-worthy physical editions, and building a community of like-minded readers. Pinefall publishes fantasy, science fiction, horror, and stories that move between those categories.

Every Pinefall book is written by a person. While technology like LLMs might be able to arrange serviceable stories in the near future, we believe that the human craft of writing is something beautiful to be preserved and celebrated. As the press grows, Pinefall intends to work with a small number of authors whose work fits the vision: imaginative fiction with atmosphere, conviction, and a clear individual voice.
Thank you for being here. The Archive grows.

Founder & Author

Devin Bradley Smith

Devin founded Pinefall Press to create a home for the kinds of stories he wants to read.
He lives in Utah Valley with his wife and two sons. He speaks fluent Japanese, is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, and has a longstanding interest in geology and paleontology. When he is not writing, he can usually be found exploring Utah’s ancient landscapes, making music, spending time with his family, or in a quiet place with his nose in a book.
